Windows 7 had 8 million testers, biggest beta ever

Microsoft has revealed a bunch of numbers surrounding the development of Windows 7, and boy do they carry a lot of weight.

In addition to helping us understand how the Windows 7 product development and planning team used feedback to shape the final release of Vista’s successor, Microsoft also followed up to give us some more detailed numbers. The company threw a lot of data points at us, but the one that stuck out like a sore thumb was this number: more than eight million people took part in the Windows 7 beta program. Redmond made a point to say that this number was more than any Microsoft beta ever.

Windows 7 India Prices Revealed

Windows 7 has been launched and that certainly is great new for India when it comes to the pricing. The prices are apparently 40% lower than the US prices.

Windows 7 BitLocker To Go Reader for Vista SP2, XP SP3

Microsoft is not backporting a new Windows 7 feature that allows customers to encrypt removable devices to the platform’s precursors, namely Windows XP and Windows Vista, but it is offering users a solution that allows them to access encrypted content. In this regard, the Redmond company has made available for download the BitLocker To Go Reader. The utility is designed to compensate the lack of the BitLocker To Go feature in XP and Vista, but permits exclusively read-only access to BitLocker-protected FAT-formatted drives, and only from machines running either XP or Vista.

Windows 7 Available Worldwide Today

The official launch event of Windows 7 is still hours away, but the latest iteration of the Windows client from Microsoft has already hit the market, as initially scheduled, today October 22nd, 2009. The successor of Windows Vista is now available for purchase for customers in markets around the world, while Microsoft is gearing up for the official release in the U.S. The Redmond company has already confirmed that the main event celebrating Windows 7’s General Availability will be hosted in New York City and will feature its Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer.

Pirated Windows 7 Just $3

Windows 7 might officially be just away from becoming available for purchase to customers worldwide, but fact is that the operating system is already available for free, almost free, or at a reduced price compared to what Microsoft is charging for the product. Pirated copies of the latest iteration of the Windows client are being sold for as low as $3 in Shanghai’s Xinyang market, in China, according to Reuters. In this regard, it appears that the Redmond-based company will have just as hard a battle tackling piracy in China as it did with Windows Vista.
